Blood Conservation Program

Blood Conservation ProgramReducing your risk of blood transfusion

At Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH), your safety and health are our top priorities. One of the many ways we strive to provide the best care possible is through our Blood Conservation Program.

The program is designed to provide advanced medical and surgical care to our patients without the use of blood by using effective alternative treatments and methods. BMH is the only hospital in the Lowcountry that offers such a program.

Benefits of blood conservation

Even though blood is safer than ever before, transfusions still carry risk. Some of the risks include transfusion reactions, viral and bacterial disease transmission, as well as other complications and adverse effects.

Avoiding transfusions when possible offers a variety of benefits. For example, patients who don't have transfusions tend to heal better, have fewer infections and less complications, and go home sooner than those who do receive blood.

Through this program, we do all that we can to reduce your need for blood transfusions. Blood conservation also helps to conserve the donated blood we have for those times when transfusion cannot be avoided. To learn more about donating blood, visit The Blood Alliance services page.

Blood conservation coordinator

BMH has a dedicated blood conservation coordinator. The coordinator is a registered nurse with specialized training in blood conservation. If you have questions about transfusions and how to avoid them, contact the blood conservation nurse at (842) 522-5293 or e-mail tlibby@bmhsc.org.
