Beaufort Memorial Hospital Named
For the eighth year in a row, Beaufort
Memorial Hospital has been recognized as one of the nation’s MOST
WIRED—SMALL AND RURAL Hospitals, according
to the results of the 2010 Most Wired Survey released in
the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. It
is one of five hospitals in the state of South Carolina to
achieve this distinction.
Hospitals understand the importance of health information
technology (IT) and the benefits of its widespread adoption,
yet as a field still face significant barriers to implementation
according to a newly released survey of America's Most Wired
hospitals and health systems.

BMH invests in bedside medication
verification
system to ensure patient safety
The familiar bar code scanning system used
at your local grocery store has become the latest technology
being adopted by hospitals to improve patient safety. At
Beaufort Memorial Hospital—one of only a handful of
South Carolina health care providers to have implemented
the system—scanning devices are now being used at the
bedside to help ensure patients receive the proper medication. “We
dispense a million doses of drugs a year,” said Susan
Converse, a staff pharmacist at the 197-bed hospital.

Moving beyond “space-age” technology,
Beaufort Memorial offers patients the least invasive surgical
treatments. The daVinci Surgical system at BMH provides
surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery
and conventional laparoscopy.
