Beaufort Memorial Hospital opened its doors in May 1944 with 25 beds. Before that time, there was no hospital in the community. People had to travel over poor roads or by boat to Savannah or Charleston for serious medical care.

Over the years, the community has grown and the hospital has evolved from a small-town hospital with limited services to a high-quality regional referral center.

BMH is a nonprofit community hospital with a Board of Trustees approved by the Beaufort County Council. Although it is a County hospital, less than 1 percent of the hospital’s operating budget comes from County funds. And in accordance with our nonprofit status, we reinvest all excess revenues into improvements to the hospital’s facilities and services.

As the hospital has grown and improved, so has its staff. With a medical staff of more than 100 board-certified specialists, Beaufort Memorial Hospital offers a wide range of services to area residents.
