Our Board of Trustees

Beaufort Memorial Hospital is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Beaufort County Council. Board members serve rotating terms. Applications to serve on the hospital Board of Trustees are available at the county offices.

Current BMH Board of Trustees

Jerry Schulze (Chair)
Gerald “Jerry” Schulze graduated from Dartmouth College with an undergraduate degree in history.  He received an MBA from Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business Administration.  During his career, Jerry served as President and CEO of Medeva Americas, Inc., and was Vice President and elected corporate officer at Pfizer, Inc.  Jerry is also an avid sailor.  He is retired and lives with his wife Missy on Cat Island.
Terry Murray (Vice Chair)
Terry Murray recently retired as CFO of Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority.  She was with the Water and Sewer Authority from 1992-2010.  She served on the Broad River Healthcare Board of Directors prior to being named to the BMH Board. Other interests include Beaufort County Open Land Trust and Historic Beaufort Foundation.  She and her husband David live in Beaufort.
David L. Tedder, Esq. (Secretary)
David Tedder is a life-long resident of Beaufort County. He is an attorney in private practice, licensed to practice in South Carolina and Federal Courts. He attended the College of Charleston, University of Maryland Law School, and University of South Carolina Law School. David is the City Attorney for the City of Hardeeville. He served on the Broad River Healthcare Board of Directors. He is a member of the SC Municipal Attorneys’ Association, serving on its Board of Directors, the SC County Attorneys’ Association, and the International Municipal Lawyers’ Association. He serves on the SC Bar’s House of Delegates, representing the 14th Judicial Circuit. He and his wife, Anne, live on Lady’s Island.
Andrea S. Allen, M.S., L.M.S.W.
Allen is Assistant Director and member of the Executive Team with the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center. She directs the Child, Adolescent and their Families Program, and she is also a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), and provides consultation and training in child and adult mental health issues. A graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville with a BA in history, Allen went on to receive her Masters degree in history there. She has participated in community and state level programs including Collaborative Organization for Services of Youth (COSY) and Senior Services of Beaufort.
Steven Kessel, M. D.
Dr. Steven Kessel is an internal medicine specialist with Beaufort Memorial Primary Care. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Kessel has been in Beaufort since 1999. After graduating from West Virginia University with a B.A. (pre-med), he earned his M.D. from West Virginia University Medical School. He then went on to complete his internship and residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WV.  Dr. Kessel is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  Before coming to Beaufort, he worked at the Nalle Clinic in Charlotte, NC, had a solo practice in Ripley, WV, and he worked as a volunteer physician in the American Samoan Islands.  He and his wife Nancy live on Lady’s Island.
Bill Paddock
G.W. “Bill” Paddock is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business.  Throughout his career, he held various positions in Aetna’s Employee Benefits Division, including Vice President, Southeast Market (Atlanta, GA) and Vice President, Eastern Region (Hartford, CT).  He is an avid sailor.  Bill is retired and lives with his wife Josie at Dataw.
James Simmons, M. D.
Dr. James Simmons is a Board Certified Pediatrician who received a BS in Biology from Morehouse College.  He received his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and did his pediatric residency at the University of South Florida.  Dr. Simmons has chaired Beaufort Memorial Hospital‘s Credentials Committee, and is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at MUSC.  He has been in private practice in Beaufort since 2004.  He is in private practice at All Children’s Pediatrics in Beaufort.  He and his wife Lana live in Beaufort.
Pat Thompson, M.D.
Dr. Patricia A. Thompson graduated cum laude from West Virginia University, and from West Virginia University Medical School where she was a member of AOA (Medical School Honor Society).  She completed her OB/GYN residency at MacDonald Women’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.  She is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and practices with Beaufort Ob/Gyn.  Dr. Thompson is a member of the AMA and the South Carolina Medical Society. She was recently chosen as BMH’s Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to assist with upgrades in our patient data creation with the upgrade to Meditech 6.0. She and her husband Dr. Gary Thompson, an anesthesiologist, live in Beaufort.
Susan C. Williams, M.S., Ph.D.
This is Williams’ second stint as a member of the BMH Board; she previously served from 1993 to 1998. Since that time, she held leadership positions at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Outer Cape Health Services, Inc., in Orleans, MA. She returned to the area in 2005 to work on Nursing (BSN) program development at USC – Beaufort. She is currently Department Chair, Nursing and Associate Professor at USC – B. Williams received her BSN from Michigan State University, and her MS from Boston College. In 1996, she received her Ph.D. in Nursing Science from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
